Advice for officers, head teachers, clerks, and members of the public as well as governors, is backed by long experience, up-to-date information and specialist help. We have had an advice line for many years. It is free, impartial and confidential. With our governor experience we know how schools and governing bodies work. We welcome questions from clerks.

ISCG has close links with central and local government organisations and other independent advisory groups, including, the Educational Law Association (ELAS), the DCSF's Advisory Group on Governance (AGOG) and the One Stop Shop for Governors. We contribute to DCSF consultations on all matters which affect governors.

We offer an extensive, in-depth consultancy service to governing bodies where challenging situations have emerged, for example:
  • working with a governing body to improve the effectiveness of their procedures and meetings
  • mediating in disputes within the governing body or with the LA or the head teacher
  • helping a governing body to monitor and evaluate its work
  • appointing a new head teacher
  • working with governing bodies on extended schools
  • the implications for governors of Every Child Matters.
There is a small charge for this service.
